My interest in Early Childhood Education began in the early 1960’s when our children were pre-school age and this led me to many years of involvement in the Waikato Free Kindergarten Association.
Our daughter worked as a homebased Educator for a period of 12 years and through this I came to appreciate the value of homebased care and education as I could see first-hand that it offered parents/whānau the flexibility to meet their personal requirements and that children were nurtured in a warm and caring home environment enabling valuable individual attention and learning opportunities.
In 2010 my husband and I established Gingerbread Cottage. Our goal was to build a service that was family focused and that would offer children a wide range of learning opportunities from which they would grow into competent and capable learners and at the same time provide them with a home environment of warmth and caring.
To work with us in achieving that goal we have a stable and committed teaching and administration team that have a drive to provide educators, children and families/ whānau with the best learning outcomes for their children. We believe we are achieving that goal and can confidently say that we provide one of the best privately owned homebased services in the Hamilton and surrounding areas.
My name is Wendy I moved to Hamilton from Auckland 15 years ago, I have a strong back ground in Administration and worked 10 years in childcare in the office a few years ago, which I really enjoyed, I have two daughters 19 and 21, I love going out for dinner, going to the movies and walking my miniature schnauzer Daisy. I look forward to the opportunity to work at Gingerbread Cottage and getting to know you all.
Visiting Teacher– Business Operations Manager
Kia Ora my name is Debbie and I am a mother and a ‘Granny’. My involvement in homebased childcare began in 1995 when I became an Educator. As a single parent I found this to be a way of being available for my own child and an opportunity to re -enter the workforce. During my time as an Educator I completed the New Zealand Certificate in Family Day Care: CARE GIVERS certificate, and then my Diploma of Teaching in Early Childhood Education.
During my years as an Educator I experienced the rewards of working closely with children as they developed and achieved goals and became confident learners. I also worked closely with the families and my home became an extension of their own. It has been my absolute pleasure to continue to be involved with some of my care children right through to attending their 21st birthday celebrations, knowing that they have grown into the competent adults that their families aspired for them.
In my role as a Visiting Teacher for the past 10+years, I am now in a position to support and guide Educators as I was supported in the past and to pass on the knowledge that I have gained over my many years in homebased childcare.
While I continue in my Visiting Teacher role I am also involved in the business operations side of Gingerbread Cottage, ensuring that our service continues to grow, continues to attract quality educators and continues to provide the best possible service for our families, whānau, tamariki and Educators This is a role that interests me greatly.
My interests outside of work include my family, travel, my garden, rugby and I am avid of supporter of most other sports.

I have worked in the early childhood field since leaving school – a few years ago now!
I trained as a kindergarten teacher (Diploma of Teaching Early Childhood Education) at Waikato University before heading to Christchurch and then overseas for a number of years.
I have had some fantastic and varied experiences throughout the early childhood field from working as a nanny, to a head teacher in a Nursery School in Bethnal Green East London, to running a small preschool class integrated within a junior class at a small rural Waikato school, to ten wonderful years in a small local Preschool here in Hamilton.
I have been working in Home-based childcare for several years now and I am constantly amazed at the wonderful experiences that Educators provide for their children both within their homes and out in the wider community.
One of the most rewarding aspects of this job is seeing the quality of the relationships that are built between the Educator, the child and their families therefore creating strong links between the child’s care and home environments.
It really does become a home away from home.

I am a qualified and fully registered teacher whose career has spanned across 20+ years in the Early Childhood Sector. My experience, has seen me teaching in Childcare, Kindergarten and working as part of the multi-disciplinary team in Paediatrics at Waikato Hospital, where I worked as a Hospital Play Specialist for 14 years.
My passion in my work with babies, children and families has led me to enhance my career by extending my knowledge and training, becoming an Infant massage instructor with IAIM and a relax kids coach through Relax Kids UK.
My journey into homebased childcare began with the opportunity to join the Gingerbread Cottage team as a relieving visiting teacher for a fixed term. During this time, my thoughts about the benefits homebased care offers, by providing quality experiences for children and families in a relaxed home setting, were confirmed. I am excited to be able to continue working alongside this professional and dedicated team, in creating positive learning outcomes and adventures for all involved.
As educators of our most precious Taonga, we are blessed every day to look at the world through the eyes and experiences of our wee Tamariki. Our work in supporting, guiding, and allowing them to make sense of their world, is paramount in allowing them to develop a life-long love for learning.
