My interest in Early Childhood Education began in the early 1960’s when our children were pre-school age and this led me to many years of involvement in the Waikato Free Kindergarten Association.
Our daughter worked as a homebased Educator for a period of 12 years and through this I came to appreciate the value of homebased care and education as I could see first-hand that it offered parents/whānau the flexibility to meet their personal requirements and that children were nurtured in a warm and caring home environment enabling valuable individual attention and learning opportunities.
In 2010 my husband and I established Gingerbread Cottage. Our goal was to build a service that was family focused and that would offer children a wide range of learning opportunities from which they would grow into competent and capable learners and at the same time provide them with a home environment of warmth and caring.
To work with us in achieving that goal we have a stable and committed teaching and administration team that have a drive to provide educators, children and families/ whānau with the best learning outcomes for their children. We believe we are achieving that goal and can confidently say that we provide one of the best privately owned homebased services in the Hamilton and surrounding areas.

Visiting Teacher– Business Operations Manager
Kia Ora my name is Debbie and I am a mother and a ‘Granny’. My involvement in homebased childcare began in 1995 when I became an Educator. As a single parent I found this to be a way of being available for my own child and an opportunity to re -enter the workforce. During my time as an Educator I completed the New Zealand Certificate in Family Day Care: CARE GIVERS certificate, and then my Diploma of Teaching in Early Childhood Education.
During my years as an Educator I experienced the rewards of working closely with children as they developed and achieved goals and became confident learners. I also worked closely with the families and my home became an extension of their own. It has been my absolute pleasure to continue to be involved with some of my care children right through to attending their 21st birthday celebrations, knowing that they have grown into the competent adults that their families aspired for them.
In my role as a Visiting Teacher for the past 10+years, I am now in a position to support and guide and Educators as I was supported in the past and to pass on the knowledge that I have gained over my many years in homebased childcare.
While I continue in my Visiting Teacher role I am also involved in the business operations side of Gingerbread Cottage, ensuring that our service continues to grow, continues to attract quality educators and continues to provide the best possible service for our families, whānau, tamariki and Educators This is a role that interests me greatly.
My interests outside of work include my family, travel, my garden, rugby and I am avid of supporter of most other sports.

I have worked in the early childhood field since leaving school – a few years ago now!
I trained as a kindergarten teacher (Diploma of Teaching Early Childhood Education) at Waikato University before heading to Christchurch and then overseas for a number of years.
I have had some fantastic and varied experiences throughout the early childhood field from working as a nanny, to a head teacher in a Nursery School in Bethnal Green East London, to running a small preschool class integrated within a junior class at a small rural Waikato school, to ten wonderful years in a small local Preschool here in Hamilton.
I have been working in Home-based childcare for several years now and I am constantly amazed at the wonderful experiences that Educators provide for their children both within their homes and out in the wider community.
One of the most rewarding aspects of this job is seeing the quality of the relationships that are built between the Educator, the child and their families therefore creating strong links between the child’s care and home environments.
It really does become a home away from home.

Kia Ora My name is Emma, my journey in Early childhood began when my own mother become an Early childhood Teacher after I left school. I was always popping my head in and helping out where I could overtime so after my first son was born I decided it was time for a change and off to the University of Waikato to begin my studies. Over this time I was a relief teacher in several centres gaining all sorts of knowledge in the industry before gaining full time employment in a private Kindergarten, from here I worked my way into a supervisor’s role.
I am new to working in the homebased child care sector though my first son attended home based care while I was studying at University. Now my youngest son is enjoying the many benefits of care and education that homebased childcare has to offer. I have really enjoyed my first few months working with the team at Gingerbread Cottage and the Educators, children and whanau and look forward to our learning journey together
